Encaustic painting is an ancient technique, cherished for its richness, depth, and durability, dating back thousands of years. For over 20 years, I have worked with waxes sourced from diverse regions, discovering their unique textures and properties. My work bridges tradition and innovation, blending ancient methods with contemporary artistry.
I use Italian pigments, both mineral and vegetal, to achieve vibrant and earthy tones, carefully blending them with melted wax to create custom colors. Gold leaf, a nod to my Ecuadorian roots in colonial religious art, adds a layer of reverence and timeless elegance to my pieces. Painting with molten wax is just the beginning; I sculpt the wax as it cools, creating intricate textures and three-dimensional effects. The versatility of wax allows for a range of finishes—transparent, translucent, opaque, matte—and mimics surfaces with stunning realism. However, the process demands precision, sculptural expertise, and working with fire, making it as challenging as it is rewarding.
This craft is more than art; it’s a celebration of nature and sustainability. Beeswax, the cornerstone of encaustic painting, highlights the vital contributions of beekeepers. Their noble work ensures the survival of bees, crucial to our ecosystems. Through my art, I honor their labor and strive to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these incredible pollinators.
With every piece, I aim to create beauty that is deeply connected to tradition, nature, and the environment.
